about

All new original Earl Zero songs in a heavy 70's Roots Reggae dub style. All live instruments (B3, Clavinet, Rhodes, etc) tracked to 2" tape featuring guest appearances from members of Roots Radics, Greyboy Allstars, The Bongolian, The Devastators.

Singer/songwriter Earl “Zero” Johnson has played a crucial role in the classic 70’s era of Roots Reggae, releasing powerful cultural numbers whose conscious lyrics were often combined with tough musical backings from the Soul Syndicate band. His most beloved song, “None Shall Escape the Judgement,” is an acknowledged classic. For over 30 years Earl Zero has been a prolific composer of Jamaican cultural music & performed live internationally. Following up from his smash 2011 showcase album “And God Said to Man” comes a new full length album titled “Marketplace”.
Born in 1952, in the Greenwich Town neighborhood of Kingston, Jamaica, Zero was the eldest of ten
children of a fisherman father. Zero’s musical interest in music was sparked early, as was that of his school
friend guitarist Earl “Chinna” Smith. Self-taught, together the two were soon penning songs. In 1975 Zero’s
single "Righteous Works" became a substantial hit. Zero then linked with Bertram Brown in 1976 and recorded a steady stream of singles, including "Get Happy," "Blackbird," and "Shackles and Chains." All were included on the singer's 1979 In the Right Way album, released in Britain as “Only Jah Can Ease the Pressure”. “Visions of Love” Zero's sole U.S. release arrived that same year, and featured new numbers as well as re-cuts of older songs. Visions' album success allowed Earl Zero to immigrate to the States, where he still resides today in California.

In 2007 the classic documentary movie “Word, Sound, Power” was re-released, featuring the legendary Soul Syndicate band backing Zero on some heavy live cuts in Yard. In 2010 Spanish Producer A-Lone released the smash showcase album titled “And God Said to Man”, which landed on many top 10 reggae review lists of the year.

Now in 2011 Zero has teamed up with producer Siahvash Dowlatshai to release the full length album “Marketplace”, featuring guest appearances by members of Roots Raddics, The Greyboy Allstars, The Devastators, The Bongolian, etc.
A prolific songwriter and soul survivor, Earl Zero is one of the few active remaining performers from the golden age of Reggae Music.
